Personal thoughts towards the movie “Helvetica”
In the outset, I thought this movie was about the different kinds of fonts in the world, but I was wrong, it talks about people’s opinions of the font “helvetica” and the historical development of it.
It was also about how words affects the readers. It was pretty interesting to listen to the different typographers talk about their personal opinion towards the font, helvetica. Some of the typographers loved this font, because it was neutral, clear, understandable, clean, professional,Everyday designers around the world is thinking of ways to catch people’s attention and make people have the will to purchase a certain product.
Some say the type of fonts used will affect how the reader’s feel, other say it’s the space between the fonts. This movie mainly focuses on the Helvetica typeface - its creation, its purpose, and its uses. Helvetica is the most used modern day typeface, major cooperations such as Crate & Barrel, Target, American Airlines, and Energizer use helvetica on their logos. Governmental officials use Helvetica, because they feel that it is professional, readable and formal.
My personal Opinion towards this movie & the font Helvetica:I don’t really like Helvetica, because it’s the default font on my computer. To me, when I look at this font I feel that it lacks originality, because of the over usage by the general public. I prefer fonts like verdana and optima. I do not hate helvetica, it’s just that it’s not my favorite font.
I felt the this movie was interesting in a educational way. If your a person that enjoys interviews, this is the ultimate movie to choose. Also, if you would like to pursue a career of a typographer, I’ll highly recommend you to watch this movie.
Despite the fact the movie is slow, I learnt alot from it. I never knew what was the difference between “sans serif” fonts and “serif” fonts. You can learn lots about the font “Helvetica”, about it’s historical development, such as how it came into being. It was developed by two guys, a designer (Max) and the advisor (Haas). In the movie I learned why some people love the font “Helvetica”, a summary of their reasons are: neutral, no personality, simple, plain, legible, non expressive, formal… (ETC).
While some typographers opposed it, because they feel that it doesn’t give the reader any feeling, and that Helvetica is overused, because nearly all the signs and labels in New York city is made out of the font Helvetica.
Also, Helvetica is the default font of most computers, which makes it tiring to look at.Personally, I think whether you like a font depends on your personal view point.
